week 2 journal
The readings this week were quite interesting. I had never really heard of the ways in which conflicts of race would have factored into the history of surfing, but the article "Waves of Resistance" by Isiah Walker outlines how racism occurred in surf culture in Hawaii in the early 20th century. The conflicts between the Hui Nalu surfers and the white surfers of the Outrigger club was interesting to learn about because they showed a side of surfing that does not get shown very often and I'm interested in hearing more about how issues of race effected surf culture. It was also cool to read about early "Beach Boy" culture as I had never known that it was initially so controversial. I also enjoyed reading about Tom Stone and his journey from a troubled beginning and his eventual total immersion into Hawaiian culture. It was cool to read about the different types of boards that he used in that article because I don't know very much about surfing
