The Crowley article was SUPER interesting. I had no idea that there was even any kind of music revolution prior to that of the "Rock'n'roll" revolution in the 1960's and 70's. "Surf music" was something I grew up with and had no idea that it had such an epic history. "'Surf music'-a revolution of music in southern california that could transform Hawaii's elegant sport of kings into an accessible guerilla expression that was uniquely Californian." Crowley also describes this revolution as a "free-wheeling, anything goes musical journey" where the help of technology and electrical instruments allowed artists to create sounds and melodies that were new to the scene of music. It was especially interesting for me to learn about this musical revolution was that it was such a shock for the culture outside of the surfing world. Growing up with a surf rat dad, I never even thought about the "revolution" that had to take place in order for this sort of music to be created or what sort of backlash it may have on society.
Also, the Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing screening was SO much fun last night. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people showed up and how awesome that little brewery is, definitely found my new weekend hangout spot. I also forgot how much I loved Endless Summer! When I was kid we had a tradition in my family that we would watch Endless Summer on the last day of school, the eve of summer vacation. It was awesome to be able to share that experience with the friends I dragged along with me!

ReplyDeleteI'm stoked to hear you had such a good time at the screening. It's pretty special to be able to watch that film in such a unique venue. I'm also glad to hear that you enjoyed the Crowley so much as well. Feel free to imbed samples of music via youtube or vimeo into your future blog posts as well. Keep up the good work,
Trey
