"The Ocean in Us" - Blog #6

The ocean is not just about the waves washing ashore. The ocean represents the Hawaiian's cultural studies. As Epeli Hau` ofa quoted, "We sweat and cry salt water, so we know that the ocean is really in our blood." The ocean and land is what Hawaiians have been fighting and protecting from non-Hawaiians. However, the people who protected the beach such as the "black shorts" went a little too far by verbally and physically hurting some outsiders. The black shorts on these men were an awareness to outsiders to not disrespect their land. I know non-outsiders have tried to own the land, but I do not think they had to resort to hurting outsiders. I guess it worked though, it kept outsiders from corrupting their precious land.

Great quote - I am a big Hau'ofa fan. How did the Fermantez article or the Walker readings affect your ideas about localism and ideas about cultural ownership? Further, how would Hau'ofa's notion of a 'sea of islands' as opposed to the normative depiction of islands in a sea change native consciousness during the Hawaiian Renaissance of the late '70s?
