Week 6-- Post 3: Native resistance undermined or intelligent tactics?
I found Fermantez's piece looking at localism and Native Hawaiian resistance to Western imperialism to be insightful. I thought he made some interesting connections between the ways in which Native Hawaiian resistance and localism clash, essentially claiming that Da Hui, and to a lesser extent its predecessor, the Hui o He`e Nalu, serve to undermine Native Hawaiian resistance rather than strengthen its cause. While I agree with Fermantez's point of view to an extent, I wonder if Native Hawaiian resistance has a better means by which to gain any sort of traction. The Hui o He'e Nalu were quite successful in letting the world know that their surf breaks and the North Shore of Oahu were not going to be overrun with a permanent circus like Waikiki. Da Hui split off and commercialized their name, no doubt to support the original cause. Isn't that just smart? Couldn't we say that the Hui are using the very system that has stripped their land of its integrity to support and ensure their own agency?
